Writer's Guidelines

Thank you for your interest in submitting an article, manuscript or story idea to Universal Press for review. Please note Universal Press will accept unsolicited manuscripts, however, any material you submit will not be returned.
Our main objective is to be truly helpful, inspirational and informative. We aim to provide useful information that empowers our readers to go into their daily life and make changes, improve their lifestyle, live safely, eat out enjoyably, learn a new skill, start a business, or simply find fun things to do in and around their home town.
Types of submissions:
Articles
We would like to receive a variety of articles, from fun and light-hearted to challenging and evocative. Although we have yet to produce a publication that covers the political scene, we will consider submissions on relevant politics that have a direct affect on our readership. So do your homework for the publication you desire to submit for - there could be an angle unique to your topic! NOTE: We encourage you to familiarize yourself with our publishing goals and current needs before submitting.
We also take pride in publishing well-researched, extensively documented articles. When submitting this type of article, please use only the most updated research, from primary sources. Our choice of articles depends on the other material we have published on the subject, how new the topic is to us, and how unique the presentation is.
Our procedure is to read and respond to articles within four to eight weeks of receiving them. This can be a long time to wait, especially if you are eager for a reply. Please be patient. Contact us if you wish to inquire about your manuscript before hearing from us.
Books
As of June 1, 2009 we are not accepting manuscripts for consideration. We are very happy to have several signed authors awaiting publication. Our current production schedule and release dates take us all the way through 2010. Please do not send manuscripts to our office.
Queries: We encourage you to send a query if you are unsure of our interest in the topic of your article. A query is a one-page specific description and outline of your article. You can query us on more than one topic at a time.
Length:
Check the publication for past practice and current standards, needs change. For example, Bay Life Luxury will run reviews at approximately 200 words per review. However, Freestyle runs lengthy and informative articles. Check each source via the links below.
Format:
By postal mail: you may send a hard copy - double-space your manuscript and leave wide side margins for possible notations. If submitting by email: note that Universal Press does not accept queries or submissions with attachments. Please email your submission to Publisher as plain text within the body of your message.
What to include:
Please include a brief bionote (1-2 sentences) at the end of your submission, so that we can print it if your article is used.
Include your name, address, phone number, and e-mail address on the first page of your manuscript, as well as your name and the page number on each subsequent page. Include your phone number and e-mail with all correspondence.
Payment:
We pay $15-25 for articles and reviews (restaurant, movie, concerts and travel destinations); the amount to be negotiated at the time article is selected and scheduled for publication. Payment is made within 45 days from publication date of the article. We pay a 25-percent kill fee on assignments that are completed according to the agreement but not published. We pay via PayPal. If requested, we will mail your payment via postal mail.
We accept articles on a speculative basis so even if we have expressed an interest in, or given you the go-ahead on a proposed article, we cannot guarantee its publication.
It helps if you include photos with submissions. However, we are not currently accepting photos as separate and individual submissions.
